What It’s Like to Use A Neti Pot

Meet the nasal irrigation system, aka neti pot.
Meet the nasal irrigation system, aka neti pot.

Last week, I found myself couch-bound, battling a terrible cold.

Tylenol, Sudafed, nasal spray– nothing seemed to help. So I decided to try the neti pot I bought nearly 6 months ago, but have been too afraid (literally) to test drive. According to Wikipedia, using a neti pot, also called nasal irrigation or nasal douching (!), “is a personal hygiene practice in which the nasal cavity is washed to flush out excess mucus and debris from the nose and sinuses… According to its advocates, nasal irrigation promotes good sinus and nasal health.”

I was miserable and had nothing to lose. Here’s what happened irrigated my nasal cavity. Enjoy!

    NeilMed has a much easier squeezy bottle to use! It’s held vertically and it shoots the water up one nostril and comes out the other. It has to be replaced periodically, but I much prefer it to the drowning feeling I get from a regular neti pot.

    Interesting! I really didn’t feel like I was drowning, but would be open to trying something else. Thanks!

    I used a neti-pot when I had a never-ending sinus infection. It was great. I suggest you just go ahead and use it in the shower, which is much less messy. Or is that gross?

    Shower = brilliant!

    I use the NeilMed too. And in the shower!

    I’m always recommending that people sinus-rinse and they’re all like(yeah nah). Then they try it 😉

    Shower is a brilliant idea.

    I am neti-pot obsessed! My husband thinks it’s so gross and is a total weirdo when I have it out in the bathroom. Hope you’re feeling better!

    It totally worked and made me feel better for hours! I’m sold.

    I’ve never tried a neti pot, but I’d totally be down to the next time my sinuses are clogged. I hate the feeling of not being able to breathe, especially when I’m trying to sleep.

    Seriously, these things really work!

    This is definitely a good old fashioned "hey eleanor" and it did not disappoint! I definitely want to try this and that video had me laughing.

    Maybe Santa will get you one for Christmas.

    I haven’t used mine in a long time, but it is really wonderful for those of us with bad sinuses! My mom has used both this kind and the vertical squeezy ones (and I thank her all the time for the sinus issues ha ha). Thanks for making the video I laughed so hard! You did well, the first few times I did this I didn’t tilt my head far enough forward and then it does choke you.
